  i fish with 15-20lb braided spider line.i like this because there are absoulutly no coils to inhibit the small sucking bite pattern of the buff,plus it's the dia.of 6lb. line and very strong..i use a #6gamakatsu octapus hook with a hitch hiker attached(acts similar to a hair rig) with a doughball about 1/2" in dia.....pitch it out....tighten the line(leave a little sag) watch for the bump-bump-bump-pull then set....now this method has caught me about 25+avg.size of about 17lbs.it may or may not work for you.just sharing what has been working for me! p.s. on a slow bite,i dip my bait in vanilla extract

    Buffs are not carp or of the carp family, they are a species of sucker, there are 3 types, Big mouth, Small mouth and Black, I think the Big and Small mouth have the potential to reach the bigger size out of the 3, but so far the Small mouth has the larger world record at 88lb's, although fish reaching 100+ have been caught (by the same record holder).
The bigger fish are very hard to catch because of the way they feed, although not a bait shy fish, they are much better at processing what they pickup because of the fact that they are suckers, also they have a slightly different feeding style to that of a carp.
It is said they make up the the biggest bio mass of fish in the states, hard to believe because of the huge populations of carp everywhere.
The bigger fish certainly are a lot of fun to fish for and offer an incredible challange, they are almost a cult fish, most everyday type fisherman don't even know they exist because they are not often seen.
Very pretty and impressive looking, they have great coloring with almost translucent scales & pretty dark eyes. Although mostly not as powerful as carp, the shear size of the fish demands respect together with the fact that being so hard to catch, a big fish when hooked can make your knees knock with the fear of a hook pull.
The smaller fish can be a nuisance when carping, but whether big fish or small, a shoal of buffs will shut down your swim in a minute when carping, as they seem to be the dominant of the two species, but when targeting big buffs the tell tail constant twitching of the indicators when the Buffs move in make for very intense fishing, exciting stuff.....love it ;

This bait recipe comes from Justin on the BA forums!!

First ya need 3 ingredients...

1.Molasses
2.Brown Sugar
3.Flour

I start out with 6 cups of flour and 1 cup of brown sugar mix it up well before you add 2 cups of molasses stir this till your arms start to ache let it sit in the fridge for about 15 minutes roll a ball up and see how stiff it is if it seems a little 'wet' you can add a handful of flour in at a time this bait is best freelined with no weight.

Heres what they should look like when there done
